Mumbai is preparing to welcome its new mayor on February 11, which comes nearly a month after the municipal elections. This time, the post is specifically reserved for a woman corporator from the general category. The nomination process began on February 7, with the election slated for February 11 at noon, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner has been acting as the administrator since March 2022. This follows the conclusion of the previous corporators' term. The recent poll on January 15 saw the registration of all 227 elected corporators completed. The BJP emerged as the single largest party, securing 89 seats, and its ally Shiv Sena added 29 seats, allowing their alliance to comfortably surpass the majority threshold of 114 seats required to elect the mayor.
The upcoming mayoral election will see a woman corporator from the general category ascending to the role, as per a lottery by the Maharashtra Urban Development Department. Significantly, the BMC maintains its status as India's wealthiest civic body, with its 2025-26 budget projected at Rs 74,450 crore, surpassing the economies of several smaller states.
