An elderly couple in Khanapur taluk, Belagavi district, has tragically died by suicide, according to police reports on Friday. The victims, Diogjeron Santan Nazareth, aged 82, and his 79-year-old wife, Flaviana, had no children.

Police discovered a two-page handwritten death note indicating their decision to end their lives without blaming anyone, citing their unwillingness to live at the mercy of others. Neighbors found Flaviana lifeless on the bed, while Diogjeron's body was recovered from the underground water tank of their home.

The investigation revealed Diogjeron fell prey to a scam initiated by individuals identified as Sumit Birra and Anil Yadav. He transferred over Rs 50 lakh to the scammers under threats related to a fraudulent SIM card purchase. Authorities have registered a case of abetment to suicide and cyber fraud against the accused.
