Efforts to resolve the long-standing border dispute between Assam and Meghalaya are gaining momentum, hinting at an imminent resolution. Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressed optimism on Friday about the negotiations. Speaking at the North East Police Academy, he acknowledged the complex nature of the issues yet emphasized the intent to resolve all six disputed zones at once, reflecting both states' sentiments.
Currently, the Survey of India is overseeing the border demarcation process, which is reportedly progressing well. Sarma reiterated the binding nature of the agreement signed by both states under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, underscoring their commitment to the process.
Initially, an agreement in March 2022 addressed six areas, dividing them nearly equally between the states. However, the remaining six more contentious zones present a challenge. This has roots in Meghalaya's formation and its disagreement with the Assam Reorganisation Act of 1971, which defines Assam's border.
