The transfer of Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Varma to the Allahabad High Court has ignited significant unrest within the legal community. The Allahabad High Court Bar Association has labeled the event as the 'darkest day for India's judiciary' and declared a boycott of his swearing-in ceremony.
Justice Varma's transfer follows the alleged discovery of a large sum of cash at his official residence in Delhi. The Supreme Court Collegium recommended his transfer and the Centre officially announced it on Friday. This decision has prompted Allahabad High Court lawyers to strike for four consecutive days.
In a statement to PTI, Bar Association President Anil Tiwari expressed confusion over the government's motives and criticized the transfer as unjust. An emergency meeting with senior advocates is planned to determine future actions, with a promise that opposition to the move will persist.
