In a bid to tackle the escalating health and safety challenges posed by stray dogs in India, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. Chidambaram emphasized the urgent need for a National Task Force to deliver a comprehensive and humane solution to this pressing issue.
India, with one of the largest stray dog populations worldwide, faces a significant threat from rabies, accounting for 36% of global rabies-related fatalities. Despite the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules introduced in 2023, Chidambaram pointed out the system's inefficacy in addressing these concerns effectively due to a lack of resources and technology at the local level.
During the meeting, Chidambaram proposed the establishment of dedicated shelter houses and underscored the necessity for a long-term strategic plan. He urged immediate action to rectify the shortcomings and protect public health and safety.
