A 20-year-old woman was discovered hanging from a tree in Nagra, under circumstances that police claim point to suicide. According to authorities, she watched a YouTube video on committing suicide after her boyfriend blocked her following news of her arranged marriage to another man. A post-mortem, along with electronic and physical evidence, is said to support this theory.
Superintendent of Police Omveer Singh reported that technical evidence does not heavily implicate any suspects, and the ongoing investigation suggests suicide is the cause of death. However, the woman's family firmly believes she was murdered, alleging four villagers brutalized and killed her before staging it as a suicide.
The incident has grabbed political attention, with the Samajwadi Party's female wing, led by Kanchan Bharti, visiting the family. Criticism from Akhilesh Yadav and the Uttar Pradesh Congress has pressured the Yogi Adityanath government to address safety concerns for women. Police have filed a case against four individuals, maintaining their investigation.
