In a significant development for Assam, the state's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced the withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from Dibrugarh district, marking a critical step toward peace and development.
Addressing the media, Sarma highlighted the ongoing strategy to reduce AFSPA's jurisdiction, now limited to Tinsukia, Sivasagar, and Charaideo districts. This decision is part of a broader plan to enhance Dibrugarh's status as the state's second capital.
Since being imposed in 1990 due to violence by ULFA, AFSPA has been gradually revoked in 32 districts. Sarma remains hopeful that the remaining districts will soon follow suit, further reiterating Assam's progress under his leadership.
