Dragon and Elephant Dance: China and India Seek Border Harmony

China has expressed willingness to cooperate with India in resolving border issues and reinforcing defense relations. The emphasis has been on collaboration symbolized by 'dragon and elephant dance.' Recent diplomatic engagements aim to enhance ties, focusing on dialogue, cross-border cooperation, and resumption of cultural exchanges.

On Thursday, China pledged to work alongside India towards a fair resolution of their border disputes while strengthening defense ties. This announcement was made by Senior Colonel Wu Qian of China's National Defence during a media briefing concerning the ongoing disengagement dialogue and related issues along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh.

Highlighting the importance of bilateral cooperation, Wu expressed China's intention to foster a harmonious relationship through the metaphorical 'dance between the dragon and elephant.' This theme signifies the end of a four-year diplomatic freeze, catalyzed by agreeing on disengagement processes in the region last October, and reinforced by high-level meetings, including those between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping.

In recent diplomatic talks in Beijing, India and China focused on border management, cross-border cooperation, and resumption of cultural exchanges. These discussions, part of the WMCC on China-India Border Affairs, follow the December dialogue between India's NSA Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Both countries have agreed on a gradual approach to resuming dialogue mechanisms and cooperation, aiming for improved bilateral relations.
