Rajya Sabha Trinamool Congress member Sukhendu Sekhar Ray has urged the Indian government to expedite the fencing of the India-Bangladesh border to enhance security. During a session in the Rajya Sabha, Ray noted that 865 km of the 4,096.7 km border remains unfenced, a situation he believes must change immediately.
West Bengal shares the longest stretch of this border, at 2,217 km. Ray highlighted the challenges of completing the fencing, including resistance from the Border Guard of Bangladesh. He detailed a recent incident in Sukhdevpur, Malda, thwarted by locals, police, and the Border Security Force.
The TMC member pointed out security risks like infiltration and looting in West Bengal's Cooch Behar district. Ray stressed the need for heightened vigilance, particularly given the emerging situation in Bangladesh, and recommended increased surveillance along both land and maritime borders, especially in the Sundarbans delta.
