The Indian government is on high alert over China's proposed construction of a hydropower project on the Brahmaputra river, affirming its commitment to safeguarding downstream interests.

Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, informed Parliament that preventive and corrective measures are in place to protect citizens' livelihoods in downstream regions. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing with China regarding trans-border river issues under an institutionalised Expert Level Mechanism set up in 2006.

Following China's announcement of the dam project, India has raised its concerns with Chinese authorities and called for transparency and collaboration. These issues were also discussed during the recent visit of India's foreign secretary to Beijing.
