The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Thursday expressed strong opposition to the Centre's proposed Waqf amendment bill 2024 by passing a resolution urging the Union Government to withdraw it. Lawmakers argue that the bill could significantly affect the minority Muslim community.
While the resolution found backing from the principal opposition AIADMK and the PMK, which is allied with the BJP, members of the BJP staged a protest and walked out in dissent. This highlighted a divide within the assembly over the contentious issue.
Chief Minister M K Stalin, who led the charge in passing the resolution, emphasized the potential repercussions of the Waqf Act amendment, asserting that it undermines the Waqf Board's authority and poses a threat to religious freedom and constitutional rights of minorities. Stalin pledged ongoing resistance against the bill.
