The Haryana Assembly has enacted strict laws with the passage of two critical bills targeting public gambling and the disrespectful use of deceased bodies for protest purposes. The legislation was designed to curb unethical practices, including match-fixing in sports, by setting stern penalties ranging from three to five years in prison, along with hefty fines.
Critics have raised concerns about the bills. Congress MLA Aditya Surjewala denounced the gambling law for its poor drafting, while other members called for a broader review, highlighting the lack of definitions for gaming instruments. Additionally, the law addressing the misuse of bodies post-mortem is aimed at ensuring respectful funerals and granting authorities the power to act against potential misuse.
Some opposition members have voiced their opinion that the bills need refinement and urged the government to reconsider them in detail by a Select Committee. These discussions underscore the pressing need to balance legislative force with comprehensive legal understanding and citizen rights.
