A local court in Odisha sentenced a 48-year-old woman, Rubita Adhikari, to life imprisonment on charges of murder. The incident involved the death of Bishnupriya Sahu, a mentally challenged woman, that occurred in Ganjam district on January 8, 2023.

The judgment, delivered by district and sessions judge Rupashree Choudhury, was based on testimonies from 17 witnesses, including police and medical reports. Public prosecutor Trilochan Parida confirmed these details in his statement.

Rubita, who had been detained since her arrest, was reportedly involved in an illicit relationship. Bishnupriya allegedly witnessed a conversation between Rubita and her lover on the night of the murder, prompting Rubita to strangle her to prevent any disclosure. Her male co-accused was acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
