Bolsonaro Faces Trial: Supreme Court Accepts Charges
Brazil's Supreme Court has accepted charges against former President Jair Bolsonaro relating to an alleged coup attempt after his 2022 election defeat. The court has ordered Bolsonaro to stand trial alongside 33 others, with potential penalties spanning up to decades if convicted for multiple crimes.

In a landmark decision, Brazil's Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case against former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is accused of attempting to remain in power after losing the 2022 election. The court's ruling orders Bolsonaro to face trial, marking a significant turn in Brazil's tumultuous political landscape.
The charges, presented by Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet, implicate Bolsonaro and 33 others in an alleged conspiracy to overthrow the election results. The accusations include a dramatic claim of plotting to poison Bolsonaro's successor, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and assassinate a Supreme Court judge.
Bolsonaro has consistently denied all allegations. If found guilty, he could face a prison sentence of up to 12 years, just for the coup charges, with additional penalties for other crimes that could result in decades behind bars.
