Bolsonaro Faces Charges in Alleged Coup Attempt
Brazil's Supreme Court has moved towards indicting former President Jair Bolsonaro for allegedly trying to retain power post-2022 elections. Several close allies are also implicated in the coup attempt. The charges could result in extensive prison sentences for those involved.

Brazil's Supreme Court is progressing towards an indictment of former President Jair Bolsonaro over allegations of attempting to remain in power following his 2022 election loss. A panel of justices has overwhelmingly accepted the charges, setting the stage for Bolsonaro to stand trial.
The justices have also called for trials of seven Bolsonaro allies, accusing them of attempting a coup, joining an armed criminal organization, and other severe charges. The complex accusations, if proven, could potentially lead to decades of imprisonment for those involved in this plot.
Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet stated that the accused aimed to keep Bolsonaro in power at any cost, even plotting to assassinate current President Lula and Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Despite a significant January 2023 riot by Bolsonaro's supporters, the coup plan ultimately failed due to lack of military support.
