Bulgaria's Military Modernization: Javelin Missiles Acquisition
Bulgaria's parliament approved a purchase of $82.7 million worth of Javelin anti-tank missiles from the U.S. to modernize its army. This move follows a U.S. State Department approval for a sale of related missiles and equipment valued at $114 million, as Bulgaria aims to update its defense systems.

On Wednesday, Bulgaria's parliament sanctioned an $82.7 million acquisition of Javelin anti-tank guided missiles from the United States, as reported by BTA news agency. This move forms part of a strategy to modernize Bulgaria's army and maintain its territorial sovereignty.
In parallel, the U.S. State Department had in September given a green light to a potential sale encompassing Javelin FGM-148F missiles along with auxiliary equipment, setting the price at $114 million. This acquisition supports the deployment of the Stryker fighting vehicles, which Bulgaria is set to purchase for $1.5 billion in 2023.
As a NATO and EU member, Bulgaria is replacing outdated Soviet weaponry with modern arms, accelerated by the geopolitical tensions following Russia's incursion into Ukraine. Enhancements in arms production are also on the agenda, as the EU increases defense budgets for member nations.
