The recent arrest of senior journalist Dilwar Hussain Mozumder by Assam Police has sparked outrage among media circles. The Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) has condemned the arrest, labeling it a serious threat to press freedom.
Mozumder, the chief reporter for The Cross Current, was detained while performing his journalistic duties during a public protest. He was questioning Dambaru Saikia, a key figure from the Assam Co-operative Apex Bank, regarding allegations of a recruitment scam when he was taken into custody.
The APUWJ calls this arrest an unacceptable attempt to silence journalists. They stress that actions like these not only threaten independent journalism but also undermine public trust in democratic institutions. The union has urged for unity among journalists to resist intimidation and protect press freedoms.
