In a tragic incident near Russia's border with Ukraine, state TV journalist Anna Prokofieva was killed and her cameraman Dmitry Volkov was seriously injured by a landmine. The landmine, reportedly planted by Ukrainian military forces, exploded in Russia's Belgorod region, state television announced on Wednesday.
Prokofieva, aged 35, lost her life while fulfilling her professional duties, according to the statement from Pervy Kanal TV channel. The border region of Belgorod has become a frequent target of drone and shelling attacks from Ukraine, amidst reports of ground fighting following a Ukrainian retreat from nearby Kursk.
This incident follows an artillery strike earlier this week that killed six people, including two Russian journalists and their driver, in Moscow-controlled eastern Ukraine. Almost 20 journalists have been fatally caught in the crossfire since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, as per the Committee to Protect Journalists.
