Environmental groups and residents have taken a stand against the Spanish state and Galicia in a landmark legal battle over pollution caused by intensive pig farming. Activist charity ClientEarth revealed that the lawsuit, citing breaches of national and European laws, was filed at the High Court of Justice in the region that houses a significant portion of Spain's pig farms.

Supported by Friends of the Earth Spain, the case is unprecedented in Europe for addressing the effects of intensive livestock operations on water quality and human rights. A total of nine plaintiffs, including residents and associations, have voiced concerns about the unlivable conditions brought by numerous pig and poultry farms in the A Limia area.

Local residents have reported severe pollution issues, including an overpowering stench and dangerously high nitrate levels in water sources, threatening health and safety. Despite attempts to halt farm expansions, authorities allegedly continued approving new operations, prompting the lawsuit seeking accountability under Spanish and European law.
