An airstrike attributed to the Sudanese military struck a local market in Sudan's western region, triggering a vast fire and claiming at least 54 lives, aid groups reported on Tuesday. The military has denied civilian targeting.

The incident occurred in Tora village, north of North Darfur's capital, el-Fasher, according to Adam Rejal, a spokesperson for the General Coordination, assisting displaced people in Darfur.

Brigadier General Nabil Abdullah, a Sudanese military spokesperson, refuted claims of targeting civilians, suggesting the allegations arise whenever their forces address hostile threats. The assault devastated a major part of the village's weekly market, with footage from Support Darfur Victims showing extensive damage and charred bodies.
