An 18-year-old victim of sexual assault has informed the Bombay High Court of her decision to continue with a 32-week pregnancy. This decision came after a medical board from J J Hospital advised against termination due to potential complications.
The young woman initially sought the court's permission to terminate the pregnancy, claiming it resulted from a relative's assault. February saw the registration of a case against the accused. The court sought insight from a medical board, which reported no foetal abnormalities and suggested that terminating such an advanced pregnancy could endanger her health.
After deliberations with Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Neela Gokhale, the court advised the teen against termination. The state is tasked with providing medical support and covering expenses. Upon birth, she may opt for adoption, where the state assumes responsibility for the child's care.
