Russia and the United States were unable to release a joint statement after marathon discussions in Saudi Arabia, as Ukraine's position derailed the potential agreement, according to Interfax and senior Russian senator Vladimir Chizhov.

The talks, held on Monday, aimed to broker a ceasefire at sea between Kyiv and Moscow. The U.S. views this as a stepping stone towards comprehensive peace negotiations.

Chizhov highlighted the length of the discussions and the failure to reach a consensus as typical of the current tensions, illustrating Ukraine's significant role in the stalemate.
