Daniela Klette, an elusive former member of Germany's infamous Red Army Faction (RAF), faced a courtroom on Tuesday after escaping justice for over 30 years. Arrested in Berlin, Klette stands accused of attempted murder, robbery, and illegal firearm possession, confronting a potential life sentence.
Authorities charged Klette in November, alleging her involvement in a series of robberies conducted with two male accomplices to finance themselves after the RAF formally ended operations in 1998. The search persists for Klette's fellow militants, Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg, who are wanted for similar accusations.
The charges stem from Klette's participation in armed raids targeting cash transport vehicles and supermarkets between 1999 and 2016, netting approximately 2.7 million euros. The RAF emerged from anti-Vietnam war protests and was responsible for the deaths of around 30 individuals, including German officials and U.S. servicemen, during its peak era.
