The Indian government on Tuesday denied allegations of discrimination in the allocation of MGNREGA funds, amid protests by opposition MPs in the Lok Sabha. The opposition criticized delays in payments to states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu, pressing for timely disbursement of dues under the rural employment scheme.
As tensions rose during Question Hour, opposition MPs, including those from DMK and Trinamool Congress, entered the well of the House, prompting Speaker Om Birla to urge order. Congress MP Adoor Prakash raised concerns about decreased MGNREGA workforce in Kerala, attributing it to delayed payments. He also questioned if the government would release the overdue funds promptly.
Minister Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani countered accusations, stating Kerala received significant funds this year, with more to follow. He cited existing mechanisms to address delays, including interest penalties. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also asserted that the government equally supports all states, dismissing claims of bias.
