Unmasking the Russian Disinformation Campaign in Austria
Austria's DSN intelligence agency has identified a Russian disinformation operation linked to a Bulgarian national. This campaign aimed to sway opinion in favor of Russia during its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Despite her arrest, a court released her. Connections to former Wirecard executive Jan Marsalek have been suggested.

Austria's domestic intelligence agency, DSN, has unveiled a comprehensive Russian disinformation campaign orchestrated by a Bulgarian national. The woman has admitted to working for Russia during the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, aiming to sway public opinion towards Moscow and against Kyiv.
Despite DSN's efforts to have her detained, a regional court released the suspect based on her assurances of attending legal proceedings. This has raised concerns about the handling of potential threats to Austria's national security.
The investigation revealed evidence of a network operating for Russian intelligence since the invasion, engaging in activities in media and public spaces. The suspect's links to Jan Marsalek, a fugitive ex-executive of Wirecard, are also under scrutiny.
