A 59-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly defrauding a local businessman of Rs 30 lakh by selling fake 'excavated gold.' Initial tests had falsely confirmed the gold's purity, contributing to the success of the elaborate hoax, police reported on Monday.

Identified as Mohan Rai, a resident of Uttam Nagar, the suspect collaborated with two accomplices who are currently evading capture, according to the authorities. Police managed to recover Rs 1.70 lakh from Rai's possession. The scheme reportedly began when businessman Gaurav Soni was introduced to Rai and his accomplices under the guise of selling gold excavated from their Mathura home.

After providing 78 percent pure gold pearls, the fraudsters struck a deal, fooling Soni into paying an initial Rs 30 lakh for a necklace set. It was only after further scrutiny that the gold was revealed to be counterfeit. Subsequently, a complaint was filed, leading to an investigation that uncovered over a hundred mobile numbers, ultimately resulting in Rai's arrest.
