Soldiers from the Philippine and U.S. Armed Forces have kicked off a three-week joint exercise focusing on territorial defense and large-scale force deployments. Known as Exercise Salaknib, this annual maneuver showcases heightened military collaboration between the two allies.
Approximately 5,000 soldiers will engage in specialized warfighting, skill exchange, and live-fire drills as part of the initial phase. The Pentagon announced that U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is set to visit Manila to reinforce military cooperation.
Started in 2016, Salaknib and its broader Balikatan exercises have become pivotal for the two nations, reflecting an increased security partnership since President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. realigned the Philippines closer to the U.S. amid South China Sea tensions.
