They allegedly kicked him, beat him with belts, and ultimately strangled him to death. Authorities have identified the tragedy as a murder case prompted by an innocuous festival tradition gone wrong.

Furious over the killing, Hansraj's family and villagers organized a protest, blocking a national highway demanding justice for the young man. They called for compensation of Rs 50 lakh, a government job for a family member, and the immediate arrest of the accused. The protest persisted into early Thursday morning before it was resolved with police assurances.
