The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has reaffirmed its dedication to collaborating with key stakeholders in ensuring the delivery of safe, functional, and dignified learning spaces for South African learners.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the department emphasized its commitment to working alongside National Treasury, provincial governments, the private sector, and development partners to accelerate progress in addressing school infrastructure challenges across the country.

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube provided an update to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) on Tuesday regarding the DBE’s ongoing efforts to tackle infrastructure deficiencies in the education sector. The Minister highlighted that an estimated R129 billion is required to resolve the critical backlog affecting schools nationwide.

The DBE outlined that this significant funding requirement underscores the urgent need for improvements, as inadequate infrastructure continues to impede effective teaching and learning. Among the most pressing concerns are the eradication of hazardous pit latrines, the replacement of structurally unsafe mud schools, and the provision of essential facilities such as proper sanitation, classrooms, and security fencing.

Despite the financial constraints facing the country, the DBE stressed that investing in school infrastructure must remain a top priority to ensure that every learner has access to a safe and conducive learning environment.

The department reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing engagements with stakeholders to explore sustainable funding solutions that will enable it to fulfil its mandate. Through strategic partnerships and investment, the DBE aims to guarantee that every South African child is provided with a well-equipped and dignified educational facility that supports their learning and development.
