The Legislative Council has approved the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill 2024, which seeks to decentralize governance in Bengaluru through the establishment of multiple corporations. This landmark decision was finalized on Wednesday despite opposition protests.
Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who also oversees the Bengaluru Development portfolio, acknowledged the concerns raised by Council members. He highlighted the necessity of laying a new foundation for Bengaluru's future. 'The Opposition has offered valuable suggestions,' he noted, drawing parallels to Kempe Gowda, who laid the old city's foundation.
The Bill features restructuring the existing Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) into a maximum of seven city corporations and proposes the creation of a Greater Bengaluru Authority for enhanced coordination and supervision. This move includes stipulating a 30-month term for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
