In a dramatic shift, Ukraine is now recognized as the world's largest arms importer for the period from 2020 to 2024, according to a new global report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The report highlights a nearly 100-fold increase in Ukraine's imports due to the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Meanwhile, the report indicates India was the world's second-largest arms importer despite a 9.3 percent decrease in its imports, driven by perceived threats from China and Pakistan. Arms transfers worldwide held steady, with notable growth in European imports attributed to concerns over Russia's military actions and uncertainties about US foreign policy.
The United States expanded its global arms export dominance to 43 percent, while Russia, once a major supplier, saw its exports plummet by 64 percent. The report underscores a significant shift in global arms trade dynamics amid geopolitical tensions and evolving alliances.
