In a significant development, the Karnataka government has appointed Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta to investigate the alleged involvement of Director General of Police (DGP) rank officer K Ramachandra Rao in a high-profile gold smuggling case. Rao's stepdaughter, renowned Kannada actress Ranya Rao, is at the center of the scandal.
The gold smuggling case came to light when Ranya Rao was apprehended by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport, allegedly transporting gold bars from Dubai. The investigation revealed she may have misused courtesy services meant for high-ranking officials, reportedly facilitated by her father, Ramachandra Rao.
The state government has ordered a comprehensive CID investigation into potential dereliction of duty by police officers at the airport, with Chief Minister's office ensuring the probe is carried out swiftly. The Criminal Investigation Department is set to delve into alleged lapses, while both the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and the Central Bureau of Investigation intensify their efforts.
