The New Zealand government has strengthened the Ferry Holdings Board with the appointment of Katherine Rich and Captain Iain MacLeod, Minister for Rail Winston Peters announced today. Their extensive industry expertise and leadership will contribute significantly to the board’s mission of ensuring a robust, efficient, and safe maritime connection between New Zealand’s North and South Islands.

Joining chair Chris Mackenzie, deputy chair Heather Simpson, and director Greg Lowe, the new members bring a wealth of practical knowledge to the governance team. The board is actively working on shipyard engagements, reviewing alternative proposals, and collaborating with KiwiRail, Port Marlborough, and CentrePort to assess infrastructure considerations critical to the nation’s ferry services.

Minister Peters emphasized the significance of their appointments, stating, “Mrs. Rich and Captain MacLeod bring pragmatic skills and insight to the board table. Mrs. Rich’s deep understanding of supply chain logistics and customer needs, along with Captain MacLeod’s decades of maritime experience, will play a crucial role in shaping the future of interisland ferry services.”

Expertise Driving Progress

Captain Iain MacLeod brings over four decades of maritime experience, having started his career as an apprentice in 1978 before transitioning into maritime surveying in 1989. His extensive background includes work with major oil companies, ship and cargo inspections, damage assessments, and terminal audits. He has also consulted on the development and operations of export cold storage facilities on Wellington’s waterfront. Even in recent years, Captain MacLeod has remained active as a ship master, demonstrating his continued dedication to the maritime sector. Additionally, he serves as vice president and committee member of the NZ Merchant Services Guild, reflecting his commitment to the industry’s growth and safety.

Katherine Rich brings a strong governance and leadership background, shaped by her tenure in politics, industry advocacy, and public sector collaboration. With vast experience in navigating regulatory frameworks, media communications, and strategic decision-making, she has worked extensively with government departments such as MBIE, MPI, and the Commerce Commission. Formerly the Chief Executive of the New Zealand Food & Grocery Council, she led the peak body for fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) both locally and globally. Currently, as CEO of Business NZ, Mrs. Rich continues to influence policy and economic development, making her a strategic asset to the Ferry Holdings Board.

A Strategic Vision for the Future

Minister Peters underscored that the board’s role extends beyond ferry replacement and infrastructure development, stating, “This issue is about maintaining a critical North-South connection for New Zealanders and their businesses. Safe and reliable ferry services are fundamental to our economy, and this board is committed to ensuring that the best possible solutions are implemented.”

With the strengthened leadership team, Ferry Holdings is well-positioned to navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead, ensuring efficient and resilient ferry operations for the future.
