Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay has announced the appointment of Charles Finny as the new Chair of the Board for New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE), the country’s international business development agency.

NZTE plays a crucial role in supporting Kiwi businesses to expand their export potential, develop international markets, and contribute to New Zealand’s economic growth. Minister McClay emphasized that the agency’s work is vital in fostering trade-driven economic expansion, which in turn leads to higher living standards, better-paying jobs, and broader opportunities for New Zealanders.

“Charles Finny brings a wealth of experience in international trade and business,” said Mr. McClay. “His deep understanding of global trade and his proven leadership in fostering export growth will be invaluable in guiding NZTE’s strategic direction.”

Mr. Finny’s impressive career spans over four decades in the trade and export sector. His previous roles include serving as Chief Executive of the Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce, a senior diplomat, and a trade negotiator instrumental in securing agreements with Singapore, China, and Taiwan. He also previously chaired Education New Zealand and served on the NZTE Board from 2009 to 2021. His extensive experience will be key in advancing NZTE’s mission to drive greater export value and open up more global markets for New Zealand businesses.

As part of a broader strategic shift, Minister McClay highlighted the government’s commitment to refocusing NZTE’s efforts on maximizing export value and expanding international trade opportunities.

The Minister also acknowledged and expressed gratitude for the contributions of outgoing Chair Jennifer Kerr, who has been instrumental in leading NZTE through the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I want to thank Jennifer for her dedicated service as both a director and Chair of NZTE,” said Mr. McClay. “Under her leadership, NZTE successfully navigated the disruption of the pandemic while continuing to champion New Zealand’s business interests. Her guidance has left NZTE in a strong position to advance the government’s growth agenda. I wish her the best in her new role at the University of Waikato.”

Mr. Finny’s appointment is expected to further strengthen New Zealand’s trade development efforts, ensuring continued support for businesses looking to expand internationally and grow their export footprint.
