In a decisive move against human and drug trafficking, the Assam government announced the arrest of approximately 700 offenders and the seizure of 174 kg of heroin last year, symbolizing a major victory over organized crime. Presenting the 2025-26 budget, Finance Minister Ajanta Neog hailed these efforts as critical to the state's anti-trafficking campaign.
Neog further emphasized the measurable progress in women's safety with Assam's improved ranking in national crime data reports. The state's 'Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Moina' scheme, fostering girls' education with financial incentives, expanded its reach, highlighting the administration's commitment to gender equality and education. Over 1.8 lakh girls benefited from this initiative in the past year.
In addition to social reforms, the budget underscored ongoing peace processes. With insurgency down, over 10,000 militants surrendered, echoing the government's focus on integration and rehabilitation. Over Rs 98 crore is dedicated to socio-economic development, while Rs 8,291 crore is earmarked for upgrading the Home Department, exemplifying the state's comprehensive approach to governance and security.
