China aims to enhance bilateral relations with Canada based on mutual respect following Mark Carney's election as Canada's Prime Minister. Despite recent trade tensions marked by tariffs, China encourages Canada to adopt a pragmatic approach. China defends its trade measures as responses to Canada's levies.
In a move that could reshape bilateral ties, China has expressed its commitment to strengthening relations with Canada following Mark Carney's victory as Canada's new Prime Minister. The diplomatic overture comes at a time when trade tensions loom large due to freshly imposed tariffs by both nations.
Mark Carney, who steps into his role following a decisive 86% leadership race win, received congratulatory messages from Beijing. However, the joyous transition is marred by economic discord, as China retaliated against Canadian tariffs with significant duties on Canadian imports amounting to $2.6 billion.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized the need for Canada to maintain an objective stance on China and advised a cooperative policy path. While defending China's recent economic measures, Mao urged Canada to rectify its trade practices to foster a stable business environment.
