Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and Panchayati Raj, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh, inaugurated the 14th Asian Fisheries and Aquaculture Forum (14AFAF) at the Pusa Campus in New Delhi today. This landmark event marks a significant milestone in the advancement of global fisheries and aquaculture, highlighting India's growing prominence in the sector.

In his inaugural address, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh underscored the Government of India’s unwavering commitment to sustainable fisheries development. He proudly stated that India has ascended to become the world’s second-largest fish producer, a feat achieved under the visionary leadership of the Prime Minister and through transformative initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).

The Minister elaborated on the deployment of cutting-edge digital technologies, such as the National Digital Fisheries Platform, vessel monitoring systems, transponders, and emergency alert mechanisms, to ensure the safety and efficiency of the fishing community. Additionally, he highlighted the extension of the Kisan Credit Card scheme to fishers and fish farmers, along with the introduction of various insurance schemes aimed at bolstering the fisheries sector.

Shri Singh lauded the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) for its pivotal role in technological innovation, significantly contributing to fisheries development in the country. He called upon research institutions to intensify capacity-building initiatives, particularly through Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), to enhance the adoption of scientific practices among fishers and farmers.

Following the inauguration, Shri Singh opened the 14AFAF Expo, a major event feature that brought together stakeholders from state fisheries departments, academia, research institutions, and industry leaders to exhibit the latest technological advancements in fisheries and aquaculture.

Key Highlights from Dignitaries:

  • Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Secretary, DARE, and Director General, ICAR, showcased 75 newly developed fisheries technologies and improved fish varieties by ICAR. He emphasized the organization’s dedication to promoting sustainable, carbon-neutral fisheries and aquaculture to ensure the industry's long-term resilience.

  • Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, Secretary, Department of Fisheries, highlighted the Government's transformative policies, substantial investments, and the critical role of startups in propelling innovation within India's burgeoning blue economy.

  • Padma Shri Dr. S. Ayyappan, former Secretary, DARE, and DG, ICAR, recognized India's leadership in fisheries research, referring to the 14AFAF as the "Mahakumbh" of fisheries researchers from across Asia.

  • Dr. Essam Yassin Mohammed, Director General of WorldFish, Malaysia, applauded India's transformational initiatives in sustainable aquaculture and discussed global innovations in fisheries management.

  • Prof. Neil Loneragan, President of the Asian Fisheries Society, Kuala Lumpur, stressed the importance of international collaboration in driving global fisheries advancements.

  • Dr. J.K. Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries Science), ICAR, and Convener of 14AFAF, in his welcome address, highlighted the forum’s crucial role in shaping the future of fisheries and aquaculture. He noted the participation of over 1,000 delegates from 24 countries and over 20 lead presentations from renowned experts.

Publications and Technologies Unveiled:

The session also featured the release of various publications and technological innovations, signifying the continuous strides being made in fisheries science and technology.

The event was organized by the Asian Fisheries Society (AFS), Kuala Lumpur, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the Department of Fisheries (DoF), Government of India, and the Asian Fisheries Society Indian Branch (AFSIB), Mangalore.

Hosting the 14th AFAF in India after 15 years reflects the country’s ascent as a global leader in fisheries and aquaculture. With a rapidly expanding blue economy, progressive government policies, and significant scientific advancements, India is poised to play a key role in promoting sustainable fisheries practices worldwide. This forum serves as a platform to showcase India's contributions, strengthen international partnerships, and drive future-focused aquaculture initiatives.
