As Namibia accelerates towards its vision of becoming a regional energy hub, the strategic integration of its vast oil, gas, and renewable resources is set to usher in a new era of socioeconomic growth. The African Energy Chamber (AEC) (www.EnergyChamber.org), recognized as the authoritative voice of the African energy sector, proudly supports the 7th edition of the Namibia International Energy Conference (NIEC), scheduled for April 23-25, 2025, in Windhoek.
A Flagship Event for Energy Leadership and Development
Organized by RichAfrica Consultancy, under the dynamic leadership of CEO Selma Shimutwikeni, and endorsed by Namibia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy, NIEC 2025 will gather an influential mix of global and local energy leaders, investors, service companies, and financial institutions. The conference theme, Leading the Way: Becoming an Energy Hub with In-Country Value, underscores the focus on leveraging Namibia’s energy potential while ensuring local industries and communities reap tangible benefits.
This premier event will delve into sustainable growth strategies, fostering partnerships that aim to expand infrastructure, enhance local content, improve access to finance, and refine regulatory frameworks.
Namibia’s Oil Boom: Unlocking the Potential of the Orange Basin
Namibia’s emergence as a major player in the African oil and gas sector is driven by significant discoveries in the Orange Basin since 2022. The nation aims to commence oil production by 2029, with advancements in the Mopane field potentially accelerating this timeline. Discoveries such as Graff-1X, Venus-1X, Jonker-1X, Lesedi-1X, and Mopane-1X have collectively unveiled over 11 billion barrels of oil, attracting global giants like TotalEnergies, Shell, and Galp Energia.
In a recent breakthrough, Galp Energia identified a new hydrocarbon column of light oil at the Mopane-1A well, located in offshore PEL 83. This discovery includes gas condensate in the AVO-3 reservoir and light oil in the AVO-4 reservoir, both characterized by high-quality sands, strong porosities, and high pressures. Galp Energia, in partnership with Namibia’s national oil company Namcor and exploration firm Custos, is analyzing the acquired data to better understand the reservoir’s complexities. The exploration campaign will continue with Saipem’s Santorini drillship targeting the AVO-10 and AVO-13 reservoirs at the Mopane-3X well.
Empowering Namibians: National Upstream Local Content Policy
Namibia’s recent adoption of the National Upstream Local Content Policy represents a transformative step towards reducing dependency on foreign expertise by prioritizing local capacity building. This policy is designed to bolster economic sovereignty, empower Namibians, and ensure that the benefits of the oil and gas boom are equitably distributed.
By focusing on creating a globally competitive supply chain and fostering technological expertise, the policy addresses the unique challenges of Namibia’s capital-intensive, high-risk upstream petroleum sector. The government’s commitment to involving local businesses, labor, and resources is set to make Namibia a model for other African nations navigating similar growth opportunities.
What to Expect at NIEC 2025
NIEC 2025 promises a dynamic agenda, including discussions on:
- Recent offshore discoveries and upcoming exploration campaigns
- Energy security and power industry expansion
- Infrastructure development and renewable energy initiatives
- The rollout of green hydrogen projects
- The intersection of energy and critical minerals in driving economic development
The event will feature an interactive exhibition showcasing innovative technologies and solutions shaping Namibia’s energy future, with a focus on power access, environmental stewardship, and sustainability.
Future Energy Leaders Initiative: Investing in Namibia’s Youth
A key highlight of NIEC 2025 is the Future Energy Leaders Initiative, designed to inspire and equip young professionals with access, mentorship, and skills development opportunities. This initiative reflects Namibia’s commitment to fostering the next generation of energy leaders.
