Madhya Pradesh's Chief Minister, Mohan Yadav, recently advised Pithampur residents to legally express their concerns about the disposal of Union Carbide waste. His comments came after the MP High Court allowed six weeks for the state government to resolve issues regarding waste disposal at a facility 250 km from Bhopal.
The waste, from a defunct pesticide factory responsible for a deadly 1984 gas leak, was moved to Pithampur in sealed containers. Despite government compliance with court orders, the relocation has sparked protests, with critics fearing adverse effects on human health and the environment.
The Chief Minister reassured residents of their legal right to voice concerns, emphasizing the government's commitment to abiding by court directives. Protests in Pithampur have spotlighted ongoing public anxieties, with two protestors recently attempting self-immolation in response to the planned disposal.
