A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Lucknow sentenced 28 individuals to life imprisonment on Friday for their involvement in the 2018 Kasganj communal violence, which led to the death of 22-year-old Chandan Gupta during a 'Tiranga Yatra'.
Chandan Gupta's family has expressed contentment with the verdict but announced their intention to pursue harsher sentences for the main accused and those acquitted, by approaching the high court for a death penalty. Vivek Gupta, Chandan's brother, conveyed the family's ongoing battle for justice, vowing to fight until all those responsible are held accountable.
Uttar Pradesh BJP leaders praised the government's thorough investigation and swift conviction of the accused. The family plans to appeal the acquittals, with government's promise of full support in seeking further legal action.
