The Indian government is intensifying efforts to aid Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala, who has been sentenced to death in Yemen. Priya was found guilty of murdering a Yemeni national in 2017. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that the government is extending all possible support.
The case took a significant turn when Yemen's Supreme Judicial Council upheld the capital punishment verdict in 2023. Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi recently confirmed the death penalty, raising concerns among Indian authorities and human rights advocates.
In response to the escalating situation, Priya's mother, Prema Kumari, issued an emotional appeal from Sana'a. She urged the Indian government and associated bodies to intensify their efforts to save her daughter's life. Meanwhile, an Iranian official promised to do whatever possible to assist with the case.
