A special NIA court in Lucknow has sentenced 28 convicts to life imprisonment for their role in the Kasganj violence case. This decision comes after the events surrounding the 2018 Tiranga Yatra, during which Chandan Gupta was murdered, and sparked communal riots lasting for three days.
Special judge Vivekanand Sharan Tripathi imposed a fine of INR 80,000 on each of those convicted. The court proceedings have concluded after hearing arguments from both defense and prosecution, who demanded severe punishments.
The court acquitted Nasiruddin and Asim Qureshi, citing lack of sufficient evidence. The trial, initially held in Kasganj, was moved to Lucknow, where charges were framed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Arms Act.
