Showdown in Seoul: Impeached President Faces Arrest Amid Protests
Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol faces an arrest warrant execution amid protests as authorities investigate his martial law declaration. The unprecedented arrest effort involves thousands of police officers and growing tension between law enforcement and demonstrators opposing the arrest. The constitutional review of his impeachment continues.
South Korea is gripped by tension as authorities move to execute an arrest warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol. Crowds of protesters are gathered near his residence, vowing to resist any effort to arrest the embattled leader.
Investigators from the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, along with police and prosecutors, are determined to carry out the warrant, with 2,800 police officers already mobilized. However, it's unclear how the arrest will proceed, given the presence of the Presidential Security Service, which has previously obstructed investigators.
The arrest warrant comes in response to Yoon's short-lived martial law decree on December 3, attempting to break through political gridlock. Though Yoon initially stood by his decision, lawmakers quickly nullified it. With impeachment proceedings ongoing, South Korea waits to see if the embattled president will be taken into custody.
