In a dramatic turn of events in Mumbra, Thane, police detained a 24-year-old man on Thursday after a confrontation with a fruit vendor over language preferences turned heated. The incident highlights ongoing language tensions in the region.
The altercation began when the man, conversing in Marathi, asked the vendor for the price of a fruit. The vendor, responding in Hindi, claimed he did not understand Marathi, prompting a verbal exchange that drew a crowd and necessitated police intervention.
Authorities registered a non-cognisable offence against the man for breach of peace, leading to his brief detention. The man's mother later urged police to refrain from further action, citing her son's unstable mental condition.
