Indian Railways, through its sports wing, the Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB), has been a pivotal force in promoting sports across India since its establishment in 1928. From its modest beginnings supporting Hockey, Athletics, and Tennis, the RSPB has evolved into a cornerstone of Indian sports development, currently fostering 29 game disciplines, including 18 individual games and 11 team sports.

Affiliated with 28 National Sports Federations and the World Railways Sports Association (USIC), the RSPB has been instrumental in nurturing talent and elevating India's presence on the global sports stage. A testament to this commitment is the employment of over 9,000 sportspersons, of which approximately 3,000 remain active competitors in national and international arenas.

Five Indian Railways Athletes Honored with Arjuna Awards

The 2024 National Sports Awards, announced by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, have recognized the outstanding achievements of five Indian Railways athletes, underscoring their dedication and the RSPB's impact on nurturing excellence. The prestigious Arjuna Award winners from Indian Railways are:

  • Ms. Jyothi Yarraji (SCR) - Athletics (100 m hurdles)
  • Ms. Annu Rani (PLW) - Athletics (Javelin Throw)
  • Ms. Salima Tete (SER) - Hockey
  • Sh. Swapnil Suresh Kusale (CR) - Shooting (50 m 3P)

These athletes join an illustrious roster of Railway achievers, contributing to a remarkable tally of 183 Arjuna Awards, 28 Padma Shri Awards, 12 Dhyan Chand Awards, 13 Dronacharya Awards, and 9 Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Awards. This makes Indian Railways the single largest organization in India with the highest number of sports honors.

The award ceremony will take place at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 17, 2025, where the President of India will felicitate the awardees.

Beyond Recognition: Indian Railways’ Role in Sports

Indian Railways not only provides a secure platform for athletes through employment but also supports their growth with state-of-the-art facilities, training programs, and competitive opportunities. The stellar performances of Railway athletes on international platforms have solidified India's reputation as a sporting nation.
