Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has garnered strong support for his bid to chair the African Union (AU) Commission, with endorsements from Kenyan President William Ruto and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. Speaking during the 4th Piny Luo Cultural Festival in Bondo, Siaya County, the leaders emphasized Mr. Odinga’s ability to foster African unity, resolve conflicts, and advance economic integration across the continent.

President Ruto expressed confidence in Mr. Odinga’s leadership, describing him as a seasoned pan-Africanist with a proven track record. “We are confident that Raila Odinga’s successful bid will usher in a new era of peace and prosperity for Africa, unlocking the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA),” he stated.

President Museveni echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of leveraging leadership to drive meaningful change. “The power to move Africa forward lies with us as leaders. Raila Odinga can help us brainstorm, but we are the ones to take action,” he remarked.

Call for African Integration

Both presidents underscored the need for African nations to collaborate for the greater good, with President Ruto stating, “There cannot be a successful Kenya without a thriving East Africa.” He stressed the importance of removing territorial barriers to trade and investment, a sentiment shared by Mr. Odinga, who called for the realization of the dreams of Africa’s founding fathers.

“These artificial borders should not impede the movement of people, goods, and services. It’s time to actualize a united Africa,” Mr. Odinga emphasized.

President Museveni further called for a focus on inclusive growth, strategic security, and continental integration, urging leaders to revisit Africa’s historical priorities to ensure prosperity and stability.

Local Development Announcements

During the event, President Ruto announced significant infrastructure projects to boost the local economy in Siaya County:

  1. Fish Landing Site: A KSh 100 million fish landing site will be built in Wichlum to support the fishing community.
  2. Educational Investment: The newly inaugurated Nyang’oma Technical Training College Ramogi Campus will admit students starting January.

“These initiatives will empower the local community and contribute to the preservation of culture and heritage,” Ruto noted.

Cultural Preservation and Leadership Presence

The event highlighted the importance of cultural festivals in preserving heritage, with Ruto commending counties for their efforts. Several leaders attended the festival, including Governors James Orengo (Siaya), Ochilo Ayacko (Migori), and Anyang’ Nyong’o (Kisumu), as well as Cabinet Secretaries Opiyo Wandayi (Energy) and Rebecca Miano (Tourism).

Mr. Odinga emphasized the importance of integrating cultural celebrations into national development, stating that they reflect Africa’s rich diversity and unity.

A Vision for a United Africa

The Piny Luo Cultural Festival served as a platform to emphasize the importance of unity, integration, and leadership in shaping Africa’s future.
