Italy's foreign ministry has summoned the Iranian ambassador, seeking the immediate release of journalist Cecilia Sala, who was detained in Tehran on December 19 under a regular journalistic visa.
Reports indicate Sala is in solitary confinement, enduring harsh conditions including a freezing cell and constant neon lighting. She has been denied basic comfort items, including her glasses, with minimal contact with the outside world.
Iran has charged Sala with violating the nation's laws, a claim coinciding with the unrelated arrest of a businessman in Milan. Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is set to address the matter, highlighting international concerns.
