The attacker struck around 3:15 am along the bustling Bourbon Street, an area crowded with New Year's Eve revelers and college football fans in town for the Sugar Bowl at the nearby Superdome.
Police Commissioner Anne Kirkpatrick confirmed the attacker deliberately aimed to cause mass harm. The situation remains under investigation, with a suspected improvised explosive device found at the scene. President Joe Biden has been briefed on the incident.
