The German government issued a strong condemnation on Wednesday following a series of disturbing incidents where police officers and firefighters were attacked and harmed during New Year's Eve celebrations with fireworks.
Traditionally, revellers across Germany mark the new year by setting off fireworks in public. However, this year's festivities saw a troubling turn as fireworks were used offensively against emergency responders, casting a shadow over the celebrations.
Berlin witnessed significant unrest, with 30 police officers and a firefighter sustaining injuries amid attacks, resulting in 400 arrests. To curb further violence, additional police forces from around the nation were dispatched to the capital.
