The Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Maharashtra Police has initiated an investigation into an extortion case connected to the murder of local sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh, sources revealed on Wednesday.

Walmik Karad, allied to NCP leader Dhananjay Munde, submitted himself to authorities and has been remanded into custody by a local court. Karad's surrender occurred following his implication in the extortion scheme documented at Kej police station, Beed district.

The CID is actively searching for other suspects while maintaining confidentiality regarding identities of the summoned. Santosh Deshmukh faced a brutal end on December 9, allegedly due to his resistance to an extortion attempt aimed at a windmill company. Political tensions rise as Karad, accused of masterminding the plot, denies allegations citing political vendetta.
